Make your life work FOR you

the power of placebo-hacking

The modern world is full of fear-mongering.

The news only talks about natural disaster and death. Politics only talk about hating people whose beleifs don’t align. Business is all about making you so fearful you must buy their product.

I’m sick of the fear-mongering. It’s overused. It’s low-frequency. And it’s lame.

The difficult part about fear-mongering though is that it’s oftentimes truthful (except its usually just exaggerated)

When I tell you to fear seed oils, fluoride, blue light, and EMFs — I’m not lying at all. That is a complete truth. But technically that’s still fear-mongering because I’m playing a part in building your fear for something.

There was a time in my life when I feared a lot.

I feared not getting enough work done. I feared eating anything that wasn’t a single-ingredient food. And honestly, right now, I fear getting less than eight hours of sleep. And I’d like to write about that to help me break free from it.

I was always one to get good sleep. The high school “stay up late and grind” didn’t apply to me because I always got my schoolwork done right away. The “stay up late and work early tomorrow morning” also never applied to me because I prioritized my sleep.

But lately I’ve been getting 6.5-7.5 hours of sleep. This is because my girlfriend and I value waking up early but we’re also getting off work at 9-10PM or later. So whenever it’s getting late I stress about getting to bed fast. I don’t slow down to enjoy the night.

But the funniest part is — I have the tools to have energy. It’s completely okay that I don’t have 8 hours of sleep because I make up for it with my lifestyle:

  • Daily breathwork

  • Daily exercise

  • Black coffee

  • Eating foods to support energy (not make me tired)

  • Sunlight to avoid afternoon slumps.

In fact, I’m never tired during the day. But almost every night I still worry about an arbitrary number of 8 hours of sleep.

This is negative placebo-hacking.

“Fuckkk I need 8 hours of sleep!! I’m not going to function.. I’ll be so tired! My body won’t have the proper time to heal! I won’t hit my 35 sleep cycles this week!!”

This is what was going on in my head almost every night before bed.

But last night I tried something new. I grabbed my journal and wrote:

“I’m so excited to spring out of bed at 5AM, shut the alarm off, happily hop around, smile, hug Gracie, and tell her I love her. I have all the tools I need for unlimited energy whenever I want to access it.”

Then I woke up this morning, and I did EXACTLY what I wrote. No low-energy feelings. No negativity around not getting 8 hours of sleep.

That is the power of positive placebo-hacking.

Placebo accounts for 30-50% of the results. Studies have proved this.

With negative placebo around sleep I’ll wake up with 50% less energy.

With positive placebo around sleep I’ll wake up with 50% more energy.

That’s a 100% difference! That’s all or nothing. That’s a huge deal — Especially without anything changing except my mindset and intention around sleep.

You realize how powerful this is now?

I came across a tool for this that has systemized positive placbo-hacking and made it 10x easier.

I call it Reverse & Affirm.

I do this in the form of a chart. Here’s what I now filled out for my limiting belief of Sleep.

First, write down the limiting belief that you hold.

Then, reverse it and affirm it. But only use positive words. For example say “I am abundantly healthy” instead of saying “I never get sick”.

Finally, give yourself all the evidence possible about why your new affirmation is true. Placebo and Affirmations only work when you genuinely believe in it.

This WILL work. I promise you.

“Believe you can and you’re halfway there.” It’s true. The placebo effect is up to 50%. That’s halfway. And halfway is infinitely further than 0.
